Homework: 6/11/08:
6/4/08: FFA2 Practice problems for AO, GZH, YN, and LR. 1) Write the relationship between circumference, diameter, and pi in equation form. 2) 17 is 40% of what number? 3) If I have $32 and I know that is 80% of my savings, what is my total savings? 4)
5) Challenge question: I take $90 off a sweater that was originally $237. What percent did I take off? 6) If I want to leave a 15% tip on a $75 bill, how much tip should I leave? 5/27/08: FFA2
practice problem set – Chapter 6 4/15/08: FFA2 practice problems 1) Yolanda is trying to figure out the recipe for trail mix. She knows that there will be peanuts, chocolate chips, and raisins in each serving. There will be 3 times as many chocolate chips as there are peanuts, and there will be twice as many raisins as there are peanuts. There will be a total of 120 pieces in each serving. How many of each – peanuts, chocolate chips, and raisins – will there be in each serving? (REMEMBER TO START BY DEFINING X). 2)
Two consecutive
numbers (Numbers in a row. Like 38 and
39 or 2 and 3) have a sum of 91. What are the numbers? 3) Cable Company A charges a flat fee of $100 and then $25 per month. Cable Company B charges a flat fee of $150 and then $20 per month. After how many months will the amount I’ve paid be equal for Company A and Company B? 4/11/08: FFA2 practice problem set #2 – Chapter 5 4/9/08: Optional FFA2 practice problems – Chapter 5 4/8/08: FFA2 practice problems – Chapter 5 4/7/08: FFA1 practice problems – Chapter 6 4/2/08: FFA1 Accelerated practice problems 3/27/08: SCIENCE: Do lab writeup (except for the analysis questions) by Monday. Formatting is important to me!!! Go to the assignments page to find link to the format. Lab #3 handouts can be found at right. ALL CLASSES -
Schedule for play week 2/27/08: SCIENCE: Assignments due
Monday. You must do one of the following two assignments. If you do two, the second will count as
extra credit. Assignment 1: Read pages 34-35 in Human Brain and Senses Resources (green book). On Monday you will have a mini-quiz on the reading (worth 10 points, or 1 regular HW grade). I may ask you: The name of the problem, what causes it (in terms of focusing light), what can be done about it, how the glasses correct the problem (in terms of focusing the light). You will have time to go over the material for a few minutes with your peers at the beginning of class. The test may just be in this format: A table with the following columns, to be filled in: Name of condition; Explanation and/or picture of condition; Explanation of correction (what happens when classes are introduced) Assignment 2: Alternative or extra credit assignment: Take apart a used disposable camera (these can be easily obtained from stores that do photo processing) to understand how it works and compare it to the mammalian eye. This assignment will be explained further in class, but you basically have to take it apart and explain to your table-mates how it is similar to the mammalian eye. 2/5/08: Links for science “hooks” http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/ http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ Chabot science
center 1/10/08: SCIENCE: Questions on
Plastination (Choose 2): 1. How
do you make a plastinate? (pg 3) 2. How
many hours does it take to make a plastinate? (pg 3) 3. Who
made the first plastinate and in what year did he do it? (pg 3) 4. What
was the original purpose of plastination? (pg 3) Body Worlds Handout FFA1: 43-48. (ED: Add 23-27 unless you have too much work. If that is the case, please email and you can catch up over the weekend). FFA2: Individual assignments ALG: AA: 55-62 and 54. GB: 10-15 GEO: None 1/7/08: FFA1: MP-28 to MP-33 (YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO NUMBERS 34 AND 35!! WILL BE DONE IN CLASS TOMORROW). Amir: MP-109 to MP-119. Alex: MP-3 to MP-5. FFA2: All students have a different assignment. Email me if you don’t know it. ALG: Gal: CB-4 and 5. Carly: 131-139. GEO: Review for quiz SCIENCE: http://www.yale.edu/bass/writing/sources/plagiarism/fair.html 12/9/07: SCIENCE: Study guide for Quiz #2: · ABO Blood types o How many alleles are there? (That is, how many different types of genes are there for blood types?). How many blood types are there and what are they? What combinations of alleles (types of genes) lead to what blood types? o Why is it useful to know what blood type you have? If you have type A blood, what antibodies do you have, and what cell-surface proteins do you have? Know the same for the other blood types. You will be tested on what happens when a person of one blood type donates blood to a person of another (or the same) blood type. Accept or reject and why. · Sex-linked diseases (like color-blindness) o Be able to explain why sex-linked diseases like color-blindness are usually found in males. Make sure you know your vocabulary, because when you explain it, I want it using explicit vocabulary. · Differentiation and stem cells o What does it mean for a cell to differentiate? Can cells turn into a second type of cell once they are differentiated? o Stay tuned for more questions on stem
cells. 11/21/07: SCIENCE: You will be able ask questions about this stuff on Monday when we return. The quiz is now scheduled for Tuesday, 11/27/07. Diagram of the human life cycle. One explanatory note. What are these words “haploid” and “diploid” in the diagram? Simple! In humans, a cell is described as being “haploid” or “N” if it has 23 chromosomes. A cell is described as being “diploid” or “2N” if it has 46 chromosomes. For example, a sperm is haploid (N). A zygote is diploid (2N). ·
Know the life
cycle (the thing that we reconstructed outside at the pond). I’ll publish a diagram of it on the
web. Don’t just commit it to
memory. Try to understand what’s
going on. Know that mitosis is the
normal division of cells and the means through which living things grow. Meiosis is the process by which sperm or
eggs are produced. Know how many
chromosomes are in each cell. ·
Understand why
there are equal numbers of males and females births. What happens with X and Y chromosomes that
causes the numbers to be equal? ·
Know what
heredity is and what is responsible for heredity. ·
Understand how
chromosomes are recombined when two individuals reproduce, as in the Beaker
Babies lab. ·
Know where you
would find DNA. What does DNA do? Vocabulary: 11/15/07: FFA1: 26 and 27 FFA2: As assigned in class. Everyone has something different. Email if you aren’t sure what to do.
